About the Culinary Center at Allie’s Place

The Culinary Center at Allie’s Place, run by the nonprofit HFH, is a job training and workforce development center that prepares adult students for careers in the food and hospitality industry. Students gain the practical skills, industry knowledge, and professional confidence needed to work in restaurants, cafés, commercial and institutional kitchens, hospitals, schools, food halls, and cafeterias.

Hands-on learning is provided in a culinary teaching kitchen, pastry arts kitchen, coffee laboratory, on-site seasonal garden, and multi-purpose classrooms for catering, hospitality, and job training.

The Culinary Center serves both residents of HFH family shelters and members of the broader community. All trainings are free for those who qualify.

60-Hour Culinary Training Program

The 60-hour culinary training program prepares students for entry-level positions in the food industry.

Students receive instruction in three core areas:

  • Culinary Essentials – foundational cooking techniques, knife skills, food safety and sanitation, kitchen equipment use, and introduction to regional flavor profiles
  • Pastry Arts – baking fundamentals, mixing and measurements, temperature control, kitchen math, and basic decoration
  • Hospitality & Front-of-House Operations – customer service, restaurant operations, and food and beverage service

Employment Preparation & Workforce Development is incorporated into the first and last days of instruction, including resume and cover letter writing, interview preparation, and professional skills training to help participants successfully enter the workforce. Students also prepare for the NYC Food Protection Certification and gain real-world experience by operating a live café pop-up .

Continued Learning & Career Development

After completing the 60-hour course, graduates can participate in advanced culinary workshops exploring specialized techniques and cuisines. Students who earn their Food Protection Certification may also gain experience through on-site catered events.

The Culinary Center provides continued access to courses, resources, and career support for up to one year after graduation.
